At the age of 15, young Antonio began his training for the priesthood, despite-or perhaps because of-his extraordinary aptitude as a violinist. Towards the end of his life, Vivaldi’s music became much less popular, but in the last one hundred years he has become popular again. Some people agree with this statement, but some would get very offended by such a remark. It was said by the composer Stravinsky that Vivaldi wrote the same concerto 100 times… meaning that a lot of Vivaldi’s work sounded the same to him. Many pieces he composed showed off the violin, his favorite instrument. He wrote over 450 concertos, and over 40 operas. In his lifetime, Vivaldi wrote hundreds of pieces of music. His nickname “The Red Priest” comes from the fact that he had red hair and a red beard. He became a priest in the Church at the age of 25, though because of his health he rarely worked as a priest and did more as a musician.
