At the age of 15, young Antonio began his training for the priesthood, despite-or perhaps because of-his extraordinary aptitude as a violinist. Many performances of his music use Baroque style instruments in order to play the music just as Vivaldi wrote it.Antonio Vivaldi, the Red Priest of VeniceĪntonio Vivaldi was born in Venice on March 4, 1678, the eldest child of a violinist who was also, by trade, a barber. Towards the end of his life, Vivaldi’s music became much less popular, but in the last one hundred years he has become popular again. Some people agree with this statement, but some would get very offended by such a remark. It was said by the composer Stravinsky that Vivaldi wrote the same concerto 100 times… meaning that a lot of Vivaldi’s work sounded the same to him. Many pieces he composed showed off the violin, his favorite instrument. He wrote over 450 concertos, and over 40 operas. In his lifetime, Vivaldi wrote hundreds of pieces of music. His nickname “The Red Priest” comes from the fact that he had red hair and a red beard. He became a priest in the Church at the age of 25, though because of his health he rarely worked as a priest and did more as a musician.
From a very young age, Vivaldi’s health was poor, and from what we know about him, he probably had asthma, which kept him from doing strenuous activities or playing wind instruments. Because Vivaldi was so good, he and his father toured and played violin together.
His father was a professional violinist, and he taught Vivaldi violin as a young child. Vivaldi lived in the island city of Venice, in what is now a part of Italy. It has become recognizable to almost everyone, but what of the man behind the music? His most famous work, “The Four Seasons”, is wildly popular and is one of the most commonly heard violin pieces today. Almost everyone has heard of the great Baroque era composer Antonio Vivaldi.
